Christmas is such a wonderful time of year! One of most people’s favorite thing about Christmas is the food and special treats that are made. Most of these foods and treats are family traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation. I think that tradition is what makes the food so wonderful and tasty. We don’t just get the food but we relive memories and happy times.
This time of year I always remember baking cookies and special treats with my mom, my sister, and my brother. We would bake so many cookies and then we would get together with my grandma. We would make cookie plates for all our family and friends. We would then hand deliver those plates and with our family or friend a Merry Christmas. It was such a special time!
When my mom was preparing to bake all these cookie and special treat, she would struggle with finding all the recipes. Some were in cookbooks, others were on recipe cards in recipe boxes. I think one was even in a magazine. I know she would get frustrated trying to remember which cookbooks, recipe boxes and magazines had which recipes. So, one year as she found each recipe, I would take them. I typed them up on our computer. Once I had them all, I printed them off and put them in an 8 X 11 scrapbook. I did make each recipe fun by adding stickers and decorating the pages. I had so much fun making this gift for my mom. She loves having one book to pull down to find all her holiday recipes.
Over the years since I made that cookbook, my mom has added other recipes. She added the special dishes we made for Thanksgiving and Christmas breakfast. She added the dishes we made for the holiday’s dinners. And the Christmas after one of my siblings or I have moved out, we get our own copy of the family cookbook. This is a special gift we all cherish.
If you have a family member or friend that loves to cook, especially this time of year, I recommend making them a cookbook with their favorite recipes and maybe a couple of your own.
